About Pilates

1. Why choose Power Pilates for your practice?
Through a regular Power Pilates practice, you will be empowered to discover your inner strength, transform mind and body, increase stamina, improve your health and achieve a new and exciting physical well being. Your body will totally transform from the inside out. Your posture will improve, your abdominals, back and buttocks will strengthen and become more visibly toned, and your arms and legs will become leaner. Your energy level will dramatically increase. Chronic back pain and other debilitating physical ailments will decrease significantly as your range of motion and mobility improves. People around you will notice a substantial difference in your overall appearance.

Through Power Pilates, our students discover a profound sense of community. From our beginnings, Power Pilates has sought to create a Pilates community in the spirit of Joseph Pilates - energetic, committed and ever evolving. The founders of Power Pilates, started with a nascent group of studio instructors, have since propelled the total population of Power Pilates professionals and consumers into thousands upon thousands on a global scale. Over 20,000 Power Pilates trained graduates are now included in the global Power Pilates family.
2. Who can do Pilates?
Everyone and anyone willing to dedicate themselves to regular Pilates sessions can enjoy the benefits of Pilates. Pilates is beneficial to all ages, genders, athletic abilities, and people with disabilities. The exercises are organized into beginner, intermediate, advanced, and super advanced workouts so that expert instructors can customize each session.
3. How does Pilates prevent injuries?
Pilates was originally created to help rehabilitate soldiers wounded in World War I and then later, injured dancers. In fact, the modern-day Reformer with its spring resistance and sliding carriage was developed to help patients exercise while they were confined to bed. Where traditional methods of training tend to produce short, bulky muscles that are more prone to injury, Pilates elongates the spine, makes muscles more elastic and joints more flexible, which reduces the potential for injury. Many professional athletes practice Pilates to keep their bodies strong and injury free.
4. How often should I do Pilates?
Like most fitness regimens, you will only see results with regular, consistent practice. Optimally, you should work out two to four times a week - combining private sessions with Mat classes. Within about 10 to 15 sessions you'll begin to understand and integrate the various Pilates principles in your body and start, to see and feel noticeable results - an increase in core strength, muscle tone, and flexibility and a general overall sense of well-being.
5. Do I have to do a Mat class before a private?
A Mat session may be done before a private (working with a trainer one on one) but it is certainly not required. Private sessions are a great way to get started in Pilates and allow for individualized instruction.
6. Can Pilates help with lower back pain?
Yes! Not only can Pilates ease lower back pain in a very short period of time but, often, it can correct the weaknesses that cause or result from lower back pain. Pilates is designed to give greater stability to the spine by strengthening the muscles in the lower back and pelvis. Improving alignment and returning function to these areas alleviates pressure on the lumbar discs, which has been scientifically demonstrated to assuage back pain.
7. Will I actually look taller?
Your posture will improve so dramatically that your height may increase. Pilates can help the spine create space in between the vertebrae, allowing the discs to shift back into space.
8. Is Mat work easier than an apparatus session?
Mat work is actually the most difficult form of Pilates to do correctly! All of the equipment utilized in Pilates was developed to assist clients in the Mat exercises.
9. Is this a cardio workout?
No. Although you will often work up a sweat, Pilates is not a cardio workout. We recommend supplementing your Pilates sessions with some sort of cardio (walking, jogging, swimming, etc.) to achieve a higher level of fitness in your everyday life.
10. Will I lose weight doing Pilates?
Engaging in any exercise regimen that you enjoy increases body awareness and self-esteem, which are essential to physical fitness. If you commit to Pilates, you will achieve a trimmer appearance since the exercises are designed to build long, lean muscles. Usually within 10 training sessions, people see significant changes such as flatter stomachs, lost inches, better posture. This kind of musculature increases calorie-burning potential. Pilates also promotes deep and efficient respiration essential for burning calories and regenerating tissue. More advanced students who are able to execute more difficult exercises with greater efficiency find Pilates to be extremely aerobic.
11. How is Pilates different from other exercise methods?
Pilates trains the body from the inside out. You learn how to engage and stabilize the muscles of the core to initiate movement, rather than using movement to activate the muscles. During a Pilates session, the focus is on the quality of movement rather than repetitions, so that one leaves the studio feeling invigorated, rather than exhausted. Unlike other forms of exercise that encourage breaks between workouts, Pilates can be practiced every day. That's because Pilates is more than just a form of strength training; you work toward mind/body integration and educating the body to move more efficiently.
12. What is the difference between Power Pilates and Pilates?
Power Pilates IS Pilates! Power Pilates honors the legacy of Joseph Pilates through a solid Classical Pilates foundation supplemented by a thorough understanding of the human body and our exclusive Art of Teaching.
13. What is Pilates?
Every move we make in our daily life - sitting, standing, walking, and lifting - is supported by the core muscles of the stomach, back, and pelvis. Pilates, developed nearly a century ago by Joseph Pilates, is the most evolved system for strengthening these important core muscles. Pilates encompasses more than 500 controlled exercises on six pieces of Apparatus and the Mat. It relies on the interplay of mind, body, and spirit to achieve total fitness. Each exercise balances strength, stability, stretch, and stamina to improve posture, reduce stress, and create long, lean muscles.
14. What is the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?
Power Pilates is a Classical Pilates education program. Classical Pilates programs honor the original teachings, principles, vocabulary and exercise order as outlined by Joseph Pilates and passed on by Romana Kryzanowska and The Elders. In a Classical Pilates program, the focus is on the original intent of Joseph Pilates' work and staying as close to his original Contrology as possible. Each session follows the exercise order and progressions that Joseph Pilates created. There may be some variation between schools and individual teachers but the core of the method is largely unchanged. Classical pilates studios use classical apparatus from manufacturers such as Gratz.

Contemporary programs may adapt, modify, or reinterpret the exercises. Every contemporary program is different and may change the exercise difficulty, order, and equipment. There is less standardization between contemporary teachers due to the variations in contemporary programs. Contemporary programs often utilize their own apparatus that needs to be purchased from the issuing program. Some contemporary programs include a large portion of the original method while others may stretch the bounds of what can be considered pilates.

26. Why Power Pilates Education? What philosophy does your program follow?
We are delighted that you have found Power Pilates' Education program. Our curriculum is based on a Classical, systematic, and integrative philosophy that allows us to train the best teachers in the industry.

CLASSICAL
All our programs honor the original teachings, principles, vocabulary, and exercise order as outlined by Joseph Pilates and passed on by Romana Kryzanowska and The Elders. While "Contemporary" Pilates programs may adapt, modify, or reinterpret the exercises, method, or language, we maintain a focus on the original intent of Joseph Pilates' work.

SYSTEMATIC
From Beginner to Intermediate and on to Advanced level, each exercise or session has a precise and meaningful sequence of movements that is organized with a natural, yet defined, purpose and progression. This ensures a level of consistency among our teachers and provides for constancy of training among clientele.

INTEGRATIVE
Using the original Pilates Apparatus, our programs provide the intelligence for understanding how each piece of Apparatus works and how to integrate them into a session at the appropriate time and for the correct purpose. This teaching structure ensures the best results based on individual client needs.

In the Student Handbook, you will find information on our history, our program curriculum and requirements, and opportunities gained by becoming a Power Pilates teacher. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Power Pilates Education Office for guidance.
27. What is the mission of Power Pilates?
The mission of Power Pilates is to preserve the legacy of Joseph Pilates through systematic, Classical, and integrative teacher training programs. We provide the highest level of excellence in education by honoring the integrity of the Classical method as we empower and nurture our teachers.
28. Who can become a Power Pilates teacher?
Power Pilates welcomes anyone 16 or older (18 years of age for Apparatus programs) who is interested in becoming a Pilates teacher! While current and former dancers, athletes, and other movement professionals tend to be drawn to Pilates, a background in the movement arts is certainly not required. Power Pilates teachers come from all walks of life - high school/college students, retirees, performing artists, caregivers looking for a flexible career, career changers, US service members, and many more. We welcome all interested teachers regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, immigration status, religion or disability. The most important qualification is a passion for Pilates and willingness to learn!
29. How should I prepare for the course?
Before entering the course, you should have a working knowledge of Pilates in your own body so take as many classes as possible - at your local studio or on Power Pilates Live. Understanding the exercises in your own body will allow you to focus on learning to teach, rather than what the exercises are.

We recommend taking classes of the level you are entering (beginner Mat classes before Core Mat 1, etc). A minimum of 10 classes at the appropriate level are recommended before starting a Mat level and a minimum of 25 apparatus sessions are recommended before entering the Comprehensive Apparatus Teacher Training Program.

After registering for your course, you will receive a link to any study materials (such as the order of exercises, Mat video, or anatomy charts) that you should memorize before the first weekend intensive of your program.

Be sure to contact the Education Department at info@powerpilates.com with any questions. We're here to help!
30. What is the Power Pilates Mat Academy?
Power Pilates has long been a fountainhead for providing unrivaled Classical Pilates education to thousands of students worldwide. The Mat Academy online learning environment provides the same world-class education to those who need a flexible program to fit into their busy lives. The Academy allows students to study the Pilates Method through supportive distance education, in turn, creating a path for new careers and teaching opportunities for students globally.

The Mat Academy program provides an engaging and interactive medium to learn our essential Core Mat I, Core Mat II, and Core Mat III courses. Each subsequent program builds upon the information learned from the previous course.

The Complete Mat Academy is composed of 21 total modules. These modules include video and animated lessons, quizzes, workouts, and supporting document downloads. Students can also utilize live, video conference teaching practice with other Academy students and Power Pilates teachers worldwide. Graduates of the Complete Mat Academy will know how to teach a 60-minute advanced level Mat class (including modifications and variations for advancement).
31. Are Mat intensives better than the Academy?
Our Core Mat I, II, and III courses cover the same materials and earn the same certificate regardless of format. The Mat intensives and Mat Academy are equal in quality; it is the structure/format of the curriculum that is designed differently to accommodate different learning styles.
32. Is the Comprehensive program better than the System Training program?
Both programs are equal in quality. It is the structure and format of the curriculum that is designed differently, but each program will provide the same education as well as a full Comprehensive certification upon completion.

Comprehensive is a 600 hour program that takes 12-18 months to complete and includes apprenticeship hours and weekend intensives. The Comprehensive training intensives are generally divided into Apparatus I (Beginner) for one weekend, Apparatus II (Intermediate) for two weekends, and Apparatus III (Advanced) for one weekend, totalling four weekends.

Systems Training offers the same material as the Comprehensive program but is split into more weekend intensives and does not require the student to accumulate as many additional hours of practice outside of the training lectures. Similarly to the Comprehensive program, Systems Training is divided into three levels: Level I(Beginner/Beginner-Intermediate), Level II (Intermediate), and Level III (Advanced). It is designed for those who do not have the luxury of completing 600 apprentice hours, want to learn at a slower pace, take it one level at a time, or work full or part time. You must be self motivated to thrive in this program. The System Training program is not offered in all regions.
